What legislation/legal decision or grounds is Gravesham Borough Council invoking to prohibit peaceful demonstrations of freedom of speech outside the Council building on the public highway and Community Square?

 

Cllr John Burden, Leader of the Executive, gave the following response:-

 

We are entirely supportive of peaceful demonstrations and citizens exercising their rights to freely express themselves within the law.

 

However, the Community Square is owned by the Council and whilst we allow and encourage full public use of it, we do not permit public or political rallies, demonstrations or debates on the square.

It was moved by Cllr John Burden and seconded by Cllr Lee Croxton that –

 

the reserved Minutes of Cabinet held on 2 March 2015 and 30 March 2015 be ratified and confirmed.

 

With reference to Minutes 60, 62, 63, 68 and 72, the Minutes were noted.

Chief Executive addresses Council

Minutes:

The Chief Executive thanked the current Mayor and his three predecessors for fulfilling their role with enthusiasm, humour and fairness.

 

The Chief Executive also thanked all Members for their support, kindness and courtesy to officers and looked forward to announcing who had been successful at the Borough Election on 8 May 2015.

To receive the Mayor's Announcements

Minutes:

The Mayor reminded everyone about the St George’s Day celebrations taking place at 10:30am on 23 April 2015.

 

The Mayor thanked everyone for their support in making it a fantastic year and invited everyone to join him in the parlour for refreshments after the meeting.
